Sponsored by the Committee to Remember Dr. Seabrook
We are gathering at the beautiful and historic Mansion at Judges Hill to honor and celebrate the work and legacy of the late. J. J. Seabrook, former president of Huston-Tillotson University and community leader. Thirty five years ago on May 1, 1975, Dr. Seabrook, inspired by his beloved students, stood to convince the Austin City Council not to table the motion to rename 19th Street after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
This request contained his last words. Dr Seabrook suffered a heart attack at the podium and never regained consciousness. Five days later, the City Council unanimously voted to rename the east and west side of 19th Street Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. We are gathering to remember Dr. Seabrook, share our life experiences and dedicate ourselves to a mutually beneficial future.
Note: The Longhorn Run takes place that morning, so you may need to approach the Mansion at Judges Hill from the Lamar side of MLK. The Mansion hotel has a parking lot on the north side of MLK just west of the Mansion, but space is limited so please allow extra time to find parking.
