Resources for Enjoyable Prayer
Most people are bored in prayer. So they don't pray ... then feel guilty about it.But we have discovered that prayer can be enjoyable. In fact, it was intended to be from the beginning.- "I will give them joy in My house of prayer" - Isaiah 56:7
- "The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever" - Westminster Confession
- "After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken." - Acts 4:24
Here are some of the ways we work this out in our prayer room, and these are the resources we bring to teach others to enjoy prayer:
Theological insight -- We continually reinforce our belief that God is for us, not against us, and that even in our weakness God calls us lovely. We are not daunted or discouraged by our own weakness!
Experiencing God -- In every prayer session, we aim and ask to touch the heart of God in prayer, and experience the presence and the love of God.There is nothing better!
Praying Biblical Prayers -- We ground the content of our prayers in prayers recorded in scripture, in the belief that God recorded them for a purpose. We have not yet exhausted "Holy, Holy, Holy" (Rev. 4)
Disciplined Pursuit -- What are we to do when we are not experiencing God?Rather than give in, we exercise the discipline of our prayer models, knowing that God will withdraw from us for a time in order to strengthen us and draw us nearer. We do not give up!
Blending Music & Art -- We actively work to break free of the typical image of prayer (sitting in a chair, bowed over, reciting words). We blend music with prayer, and we also pray visually, through art. We involve our imaginations, engage our emotions, and tap into our God-given appreciation for beauty!
